Entry No. 2 Fine Art as an Olympic Sport

A comment circulating from the music producer and artist Pharrell, is making waves in the art and sports industries. He asks why haven’t we brought back the fine art component of the Olympics? ARTNews does a good overview of the comment the famous singer made.

My thoughts? I think the way in which the arts olympic category was originally designed would be the only way to keep it from running off the rails, if it were ever to be reintroduced. The art would have to align with the sports in the games. This would hold the art to it’s highest from of authenticity and stay within the realm of the games. But heres the thing, art is subjective so while that main idea is what would be presetned to the artists they SHOULD or could have full liberty to define the idea of the sport as it fits within their style, form etc. This could be a hard pill for people not familiar with the arts to swallow, they might struggle with seeing how it would fit into theme. There would be unavoidable controversy in the the works made by the artist.

Yet, I think this could be a revolutionary in bridging of worlds. The athletic world and the arts, it could be a place for those who don’t understand either side to ask questions or see how their world is perceived. It could be eye opening but it could also be a cluster f***. Truthfully I have no idea how the judging would function, how could they equate the works and compare them to each other. The orignal categoires wihin the arts were across five art categories, including architecture, literature, music, painting, and sculpture. The last time medals were awarded were 1948. Art has drastically changed and challenged the oringal standards and the questin how how could they be accurratley judged is to me one of the largest obstacles. Would it be based on speed? Composition? Or would the works be done before and and judged after completion. Would style be a factor? The amount of considerations is incredible in number but it would be interesting to see what elements would be judged or how they rank the elements of judging.

But if someone with more credibility and understanding than myself (not hard to achieve… for now ;)) find solutions I think adding it to the olympics would be monumental for two reasons, the seriousness of the arts will be brought to the masses in a way that hasn’t been done in a long time, and the skill of which art has in wide variety will be viewed with the same weight as the extreme athletic capabilities.
